About the Festival

Ambalapuzha Shri Krishna Swami Temple lies 14 km south of Alappuzha. The temple is dedicated to Parthasarathy (Lord Krishna) and the idol is carved out of black granite stone. The deity was installed by Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran in the year 790. The architecture of this temple is a classic example of the Kerala style of temple architecture.
There is an interesting story behind the construction of this temple. One day, Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran was traveling in a boat with Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. On their way, suddenly they heard a melodious sound from a flute. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar soon realized that the melodious strains of the flute were that of the Lord Krishna. Vilwamangalam, with his power, helped the Thampuran to have a vision of Shri Krishna. Inspired by this, the Thampuran decided to build a temple at this place.

This temple is famous all over India for Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. Ambalapuzha Arattu, the main festival of the temple, is held on the Thiruvonam day in Meenam (March-April). ´ Velakali´ is an important feature of this festival. ´Pallipana´ is performed by ´Velans´ (sorcerers) once in twelve years at this temple.

Other places of worship nearby are Moodampadi Devi Temple, Erattakulangara Mahadev Temple, Pallikkavu Devi Temple, Puthukulangara Devi Temple and Kayippalli Sree Devi Temple.

The temple is associated with the birth of Ottamthullal. It is believed that Kunjan Nambiar gave birth to this unique art form at this temple. Located at Ambalapuzha, the temple is easily accessible as it lies close to the National Highway 47.
